Finfrock Construction, Inc. Started with pick & shovel
COVINGTON, Ohio - A few weeks ago Tom Finfrock was watching his sons and other employees lay water line in Covington. As the men and power equipment were busy doing the job quickly and efficiently Tom was remembering how much things have changed - and yet stayed the same - over the years.
He recalled that his dad, Roger Finfrock, started the company in 1943 with only a car, trailer, pick and shovel. Mr. Finfrock kept busy digging basements, puttingin sidewalks, pouring curb and gutter for many of Covington's east end streets.
Obviously equipment and materials have changed a great deal but the basic work remains the same. In 1949, for example, Finfrock Construction poured the curb and gutter on Wenrick Street in Covington. In 1979 - 30 years later - the Finfrock crew was back on Wenrick Street, this time tying in a new water lines.
Tom Finfrock went to work for his dad when he was about 14 years old. Initially, the company's work was pouring cement. The business grew steadily and by 1956 they were doing subdivision work.
Finfrock's first subdivision was for Don Hampshire in Piqua where they did the streets, curbs, sewer and water lines.
Tom gradually took over operation of the company after he returned from the service in 1953.
Today Finfrock Construction, Inc. has more than 20 pieces of modern equipment, operates from a 18-acre site which includes a gravel pit and employs approximately a dozen men. They serve both private and public customers in an approximate 50-mile radius.

The equipment wasn't very mechanized when Roger Finfrock was working on Wenrick Street in 1949. That's Roger at left in the photo above. His son and grandchildren now keep the company running smoothly.

Treaty PictorialTom is responsible for the bidding, purchasing, collections and supervision of jobs. Tom's two sons, Roger, 24, and Paul, 22, work full-time for the company. Daughter Crystal, who is secretary to the Troy athletic director, helps with the books on evenings and weekends. Mrs. Finfrock (Dona) also plays an active role in the business.

The Treaty Company has been proud to count Finfrock Construction as a customer since 1955 and Tom and Dona have joined the Treaty Travelers on trips to various parts of the world.

The Finfrocks are life long residents of the Covington area. Tom was one of the first football players at Covington High School. Also a high school track star, his records still stand in the quarter mile and 220-yard dash. Tom is a life member of the VFW and American Legion and belongs to the Miami County Homebuilders Assn.

The Finfrocks have a motor home which they use frequently. During nice weather they take it to Celina to where they relax on their pontoon. About six weeks each winter they take it to Florida and in the spring the direction is reversed to Michigan to hunt mushrooms.

Also being used are Mueller valves, fitting and hydrants. The project calls for installation of nearly 9,000 feet of water line.
